How this calculator works

Total uses = uses per year × years kept. Net cost = price − resale value, floored at zero. Cost per use divides one by the other; cost per year divides the net cost by the years.

Purchase price only — maintenance, consumables, insurance, and storage are excluded. Nothing is discounted for the time value of money, which is immaterial at these amounts and horizons.

The denominator is the input people overestimate. Halving the expected uses doubles the cost per use, which is why this calculation flatters purchases so easily.

What this assumes

  • The number of uses you expect. Optimistic use estimates are the usual reason this calculation flatters a purchase.
  • Purchase price only — maintenance, storage and resale value are excluded unless entered.
  • It measures cost per use, not whether the purchase was necessary.

What changes this number

Expected uses
The denominator, and the input people overestimate most. Halving it doubles the cost per use.
Durability
An item that fails early raises the cost per use retroactively, which is the argument for buying quality once.
Resale value
Reduces the true cost for items with a real second-hand market and is worth entering where one exists.

Frequently asked questions

How is cost per use calculated?

Subtract anything you will recover by reselling, then divide by the total number of uses — uses per year multiplied by the years you keep it. A $400 coat worn 60 times a year for five years and resold for $50 works out to about $1.17 per wearing.

Does this justify buying expensive things?

Only when the expensive version genuinely lasts or gets used more. The maths cuts both ways: it is just as good at exposing the premium item worn twice, and the equipment bought for a hobby abandoned in March. The honest input is uses per year, not price.

What about maintenance and running costs?

Not included — this covers purchase price against uses. For things that cost money to run (a car, a printer, a boat), add the annual running cost to the price before entering it, or the comparison flatters the expensive option.

Should I use this for subscriptions?

Yes, and it is unusually revealing there. Enter the annual price, the number of times you actually used it, and one year: a $180 streaming service watched eight times costs $22.50 an evening, which is a different decision from '$15 a month'.
