How this calculator works

Sale price = original × (1 − discount). A second coupon is applied to that reduced price, so the two discounts compound rather than sum. The effective discount is total savings divided by the original price.

What this assumes

  • A single discount applied to the price entered. Stacked discounts multiply rather than add, which produces a smaller total than intuition suggests.
  • Sales tax is calculated on the discounted price in most jurisdictions, which is why the saving is slightly larger than the headline.
  • It does not judge whether the purchase was worth making at either price.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a discount?

Multiply the original price by the discount percentage to get the amount off, then subtract it. A 25% discount on $80 is $80 × 0.25 = $20 off, so you pay $60. This calculator does both steps and shows the savings and the price you'll actually pay.

Do stacked discounts add together?

No — they multiply. An extra 10% off an item already 20% off isn't 30% off. The first cut takes $100 to $80, then 10% off $80 is $8, so you pay $72 — a 28% effective discount. Stacked coupons always save a little less than the two percentages added together.

How do I find the original price from a sale price?

Divide the sale price by (1 minus the discount). If an item is $60 after 25% off, the original was $60 ÷ 0.75 = $80. Reversing a discount this way is handy for checking whether a 'sale' price is really a deal.
